Death touches us all...

I attended the funeral of a fallen veteran today. He was the grandfather of our Company's senior FO... It was truly a sad day. I first met the man last thursday when he pinned his grandson E-6. He seemed so proud, both of them did.

He died this past week mowing his lawn, he had a heart attack. The funeral was done well, our guys performed the ceremonies to perfection... we had our first snowfall. It was a little chilly, but the part that sticks out in my mind most was after the service.

We all stuck around, we wanted to be the last to leave. Then SSG L came up to us... I'll never forget his face and he shook all of our hands and we all told him to be strong and hugged and he thanked us all for being there. I don't think I ever realized the true scope of our brotherhood and how much it can mean to someone to have our support. It was a moment I'll never forget. Rest in peace Mr L. You were a hero and you will be missed that much I know.

Well done, RR. It's encouraging to me to see our veterans honored, in life and in death. Tradition is so important, and I hope you pass on the lesson you've learned to younger soldiers. Honor.
