Have a question....
I asked this in the Marines forum and only got a couple of answers, but why not go straight to the boys who would know best. I have the possibility to get my EMT certificate since my ship off date was pushed back to May, w/you as Corpsman that are in the same (hypothetically) danger as Marines, would it be a good idea, now my first thought is yes you dumbass its a good idea, what if the Corpsman gets WIA or even KIA, you would need someone to help out him or the Marines in your unit, but I thought maybe I should ask around as well...any help would be welcomed thanks.
P.S ( I am in the Marines Delayed Entry Program w/a billet for Infantry) |

Re: Have a question....
I know im not a Corpsman or even in the Navy, but from a Infantry Marines Perspective, yes you should get it. Your going to take first aid classes in boot camp anyway and also in the fleet, and if you do go to combat the corpsman might be busy helping someone else and youll be able to step up. And it never hurts to learn something like that, you might need it in your civilian life as well.

Re: Have a question....
It is certainly worthwhile. The Corpman may not be the first man on scene, the wounded man's buddy will likey be and could very well save his life with BLS in the few seconds/minutes before the "professional" arrives at the point of wounding/contact.

Re: Have a question....
Honestly, the list of learning and instruction areas that WONT benifit an infantryman is pretty thin.
If you're wanting to be a grunt, learn everything you can about everything you can before you head off to boot. -Mac |

Re: Have a question....
Any Doc will be too willing to teach/instruct any person who wants to learn. It's part of the joy of the job, passing on the "knowledge" and seeing it help someone else.

Re: Have a question....
Corpsman Travis Youngblood. He was instructing the Marines who to deal with his trauma to a foot. They got him on the bird, and he said "Don't get another Corpsman. I'll be back." Travis left a wife and two young sons, one he had never seen. He had suffered internal injuries. Now he lies at Arlington National Cemetery, Section 60. If you get there, pay respects.
He was a Hero. |
