Two Marines killed in AH-1W accident

OCEANSIDE, Calif. – Military officials are looking into the Saturday helicopter accident in Iraq that killed two Marines, including a pilot.

Capt. Nathaniel J. Doring, 31, and Cpl. Richard A. Bennett, 25, died in a “non-hostile” accident involving an AH-1W Super Cobra helicopter near the al-Taqqadum base in central Iraq, according to officials at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego.

Search teams found the body of Doring, an experienced pilot with Marine Light/Attack Helicopter Squadron 169, on Monday, Miramar officials said in a statement. Doring was from Apple Valley, Minn.

The body of Bennett, assigned to the Camp Lejeune, N.C.-based Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Squadron 2 attached to Marine Air Control Group 38, was recovered on Tuesday, they said. He was from Girard, Kan.

No other details of the accident were available this morning.
