OCS without pilots license?
From what I gathered through online research, I could join the USAF and go through their OTS and UPT without a private pilots license. I talked to a recruiter today and he said that that has changed. Now, unless you have a private pilots license, or at least 50 hours logged, they won't even look at your application. Is this the same for Naval and Marine aviation? Or do they still do it the way the AF used to, in that you don't need much prior flight experience.

Re: OCS without pilots license?
I'll do some digging, but a recruiter, in general, is the wrong guy to talk to about OCS - he just doesn't know. Recruiters are in the business of enlisting people, not signing up officers. If you look around onlline, you can also find info on who to talk to about OCS for Navy and Marines - it's not the local recruiter.
My brother's an AF pilot who went through the Academy. I'll talk with him and get back to you. But I do know that the AF "used to" not really want applicants to have a whole lot of flight experience simply because they wanted to train you their way and not have to unteach a bunch of bad habits. Anyway, I'll let you know what I find out. AF OTS information Navy Marine Corps Last edited by Brad; 06-09-2006 at 07:48 PM.. |

Re: OCS without pilots license?
You do not need a pilot's license to go to Marine OCS on an "aviation" contract. Understand that before you ever get anywhere near a Marine aircraft or flight school, you will have to successfully complete one of the OCS programs, get a commission, and complete The Basic School (TBS) ~9 months. THEN you may get orders to Pensacola for flight school, depending on the length of the pipeline. If there are a lot of flight contracts ahead of you, you may find yourself getting a second MOS and working in the fleet for a year or so before flight school.
There are many options for an aviation OCS contract. Brad is right, skip the recruiter and find the local Marine Officer Selection Office -- the nearest one will be in a fairly large city. The OSO can give you more complete information. |
