ROTC PT??? Anyone?
I am in college right now as a freshman and was reading that I can join ROTC next year. Only problem is that I am not physically in shape, now obviously I know I need to workout but the Infantry Forums only talk about Basic Training not ROTC. If anyone can tell me about the physical challenge of ROTC please help. I am already in college and want to join the army so with ROTC I figure I can kill one bird with 2 stones. Please help I want to join the army so bad, but I fear about my physical condition. Thank you.

I'll sum it up. Eat right, Excercise. That's about all you're gonna get.
Walking down the block to Dunkin Donuts isn't excercise either. You need good vigorous excersie to keep your heart rate up. Oh, don't neglect weight training but also dont over do it. You NEED good cardiovascular in the military -JR |

Run, run, exercise on a weight machine, do push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, and run, run, and run some more. Running is most effective in terms of losing weight. You need to eat right as well. I'm not saying eat hay and drink seaweed juice everyday..you need to eat carbs..eat alot of carbs before you exercise so you have alot of energy to burn. Also, drink water and only water.

Re: ROTC PT??? Anyone?
Bah, not in shape. I used to be in Army ROTC when I was in college (I dropped out >_<). I thought the exact same thing, yet I didn't let that stop me from going to PT each morning we had it. And, at the time, I was 5'8 and 115 lbs. Granted, I used to play hockey so my legs were in shape but still. I will admit the first week was tough but after that, I got the hang of it and eventually started to do better than people who were already in shape. Don't let a silly excuse like that stop you. Start doing at least 50 push ups and sit ups a day and run a mile. That will help you tremendously.

Eat 5-6 meals a day, small meal, try to eat tuna before a workout, or something high on protein. Run run run. However, change your routine, otherwise your body gets used to it and you can't get as much as you did out of it.

Re: ROTC PT??? Anyone?
Bah, ROTC PT is pussy bullshit. At least it was at my school. The problem with ROTC is that they are constantly in the build phase for all the fat REMF college boys that think they want to be in the Army. The goal was to get these people in just enough shape to pass the APFT so they can branch AG and Quartermaster. I don't even know what the passing score is.
Don't worry about rotc PT. It is just to familiarize you with the Army PT program (formations, etc). If you want to solder up and be a real asset to your service you'll have to pt on your own anyway, at least once a day. My APFT at advanced camp: 98PU, 115SU, 10:45 2mi. I think it was a 350 something or some bullshit. The APFT is not a good indicator of physical fitness (or more importantly, intestinal fortitude). I've known a lot of dudes who could smoke a PT test and still be pussy bitches. In short, PT is what you make of it. We weren't all always PT studs, we just decided to be at some point in our careers. Easy or hard, its up to you. |

I attended a buddy's ROTC ruckmarch one day - it was anything but a ruckmarch. The group looked more of a charlie foxtrot than anything. The cadets looked similar to DEP recruits. Perhaps it's just how they run it over there - I hope to God that's so. Soldiers need quality leadership, not some college student looking to use their rank in the Army as a resume builder. Sorry, got side tracked. But yes, I'd listen to Followme's words, "PT is what you make of it." |

that's true, it's about initiative. but at the same time listen to j_tate's advice on a plan. know what you're doing, dont' just get out there and screw around hoping to get something done. Don't do the same thing every day, that's how you get repetative stress injuries. raise the stadard to the point that those around you start to raise theirs and you'll have a good program in ROTC.
