Re: I think the Navy should bring Back PT boats!!!

We have boats that do the missions that are needed. Coastal security is done by the CG. We have what we need.

Quote:
Patrol Coastal Ships - PC
Updated: 5 October 2004

Description: The primary mission of these ships is coastal patrol and interdiction surveillance, an important aspect of littoral operations outlined in the Navy's strategy, Forward...From the Sea. The Cyclone class PCs are particularly suited for the maritime homeland security mission and have been employed jointly with the U.S. Coast Guard to help protect our nation's coastline, ports and waterways from terrorist attack.

Background: The Cyclone class ships are assigned to Commander, Naval Special Forces. Of the thirteen ships, nine operate out of the Naval Amphibious Base, Little Creek, Va., and four operate from the Naval Amphibious Base, Coronado, Calif. These ships provide the U.S. Navy with a fast, reliable platform that can respond to emergent requirements in a shallow water environment. The lead ship of the class, Cyclone (PC 1), was decommissioned and turned over to the U.S. Coast Guard 28 February 2000. The Navy and Coast Guard announced in August 2004 that five more will be turned over to the Coast Guard beginning in October 2004.

Re: I think the Navy should bring Back PT boats!!!

ya but they are like 170 feet in length and kind of high in the water, if we had about an 80-90 fott boat that sat low in the water then it whoulf be a heck of a lot faster, and we stick some machine guns and torpedo tubes on it and we got a really efective patrol boat for guarding ships, and fighting in littoral areas.

We have RHIB for that stype of security. We have smaller boats also. I believe our inventory is fine. What would we use them for? Who would staff them? The Navy is down-sizing (err, "right-sizing").

Ya'll ought to bring back the BBs. What's in the inventory today that can do shore bombardment better? Talk about kickin' in the door!

Why would a small boat need torpedoes? or Heavy armor?

Re: I think the Navy should bring Back PT boats!!!

Where the Navy's going they don't need torp.s on their ships. Welcome to the 21st century.

And yes, the BBs are the battleships. More specific to my reference and Field Sailor's stats, the Iowa class battleships.

(In my best Joe Piscapo voice....)

This one shoots through schools.

Re: I think the Navy should bring Back PT boats!!!

Lovin it...

We have subs to hunt subs. The type of boats you are referring to would not be in open waters, that is why we have Frigates, Destroyers and Cruisers. And a RHIB Boat armed with enough pissed off Sailors because you woke them from a nice dream and M16's, M9's and "other stuff" is plenty weaponry for the type of missions those Sailors take on.

Re: I think the Navy should bring Back PT boats!!!

Not laughing. These are not the old days. We are more fit handle specialized missions. Our Sailors that do boardings get top notch training. They are prepared and equiped!
