Re: Sniper School
This might be out of date info, been out of the loop for a couple decades but...
For USMC sniper school, you had to qualify twice in a row as expert AND be able to max the PFT twice with a 5 min rest between each go round. I dont think anyone goes to sniper school right out of basic training. Might be different for US Army but Marines had be enlisted for at least one full year prior to entry. -Mac |

Re: Sniper School
I pulled this from the School Packet, off the 29th REGT site:
The following is a list of prerequisites for personal attending the US Army Sniper School 1. Volunteer: Must be a volunteer with Commanders recommendation (Non-waiverable) 2. Rank: E-3 trough E-7 (All other ranks waiverable through the Course Convening Authority’s approval). 3. APFT: Minimum of 70% in each event in your age group (APFT will be given on class start date, and is Non-waiverable). Over 40 must have physical clearance for PT. NO PROFILES! 4. Physical exam: current physical exam (1 year)non-waiverable 5. Psychological eval: Within 1 year(non-waiverable) 6. CMF: 11B, 11M, and all 18 series (Non-waiverable) 7. GT SCORE: 100 or higher (Non-waiverable) 8. Weapons Qualification: Consistent Expert with M16A1/M16A2 rifle (Non-waiverable) 9. Retainability: 1 year minimum from course end date ( Non-waiverable) 10. Vision: 20/200 correctable to 20/20 Normal color vision (Non-waiverable) 11. Discipline: No history of drug or alcohol abuse. No history of disciplinary actions (Non-waiverable). 12. Dependable: Must be capable of working alone under adverse conditions for extended periods of time. 13. All students must be in accordance with AR 600-9. The following are required for students Inprocessing the US Army Sniper School 1. 5 Copies of orders (NG/AR 10 Copies of orders). 2. Medical records (clearance for PT if over 40). 3. DA Form 2A and 2-1, ERB 4. Expert Weapons qualification card (within the last six months). 5. Physical, W/SF-88 6. Identification cards and metal ID tags with chains. 7. Psych eval 8. Meal card Notice line 8 of the prerequisites...that you must score expert consistently, as a non-waiverable prerequisite, to be eligible to attend the school. I pulled this from FM 23-10 Sniper Training: c. Commander involvement in personnel selection is critical. To ensure his candidate’s successful completion of sniper training and contribution of his talents to his unit’s mission, the commander ensures that the sniper candidate meets the following prerequisites before attending the US Army Sniper School: Male. PFC to SFC (waiverable for MSG and above). Active duty or ARNG and USAR. Good performance record. No history of alcohol or drug abuse. A volunteer (with commander recommendation). Vision of 20/20 or correctable to 20/20. No record of disciplinary action. Expert marksman with M16A1 or M16A2 rifle. Minimum of one-year retrainability. Career management field 11. Pass APFT (70 percent, each event). So the requisite is that you have consistently qualified as expert on the M16/M4...as verified by your unit before you are sent to the school. |

Re: Sniper School
The USMC crieria are the same I belive. Sounds to me like the hardest thing there is the expert marksman rating. Anyone have the adress for FM 23-10?

Re: Sniper School
I found this :
http://www.sniper-zone.com/pdf/sniper_usarmy.pdf It seems like the same thing I got from the training rooms CD Rom pack. There is a newer manual supposed to be in the works, and I know that many unit's are relying on the SOTIC manual instead of the older FM 23-10. |

Re: Sniper School
Ya know what I always thought was a little wierd, when I was putting my package together to go to Army Sniper school, they made me take the MMPI (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory) and one of the sections in the Sniper FM Said something like "Candidate should not be prone to remorse" which I understand means EXTREME remorse. But it's a little like taking a psych eval and HOPING the declare you a sociopath.
I passed.....lol |

Re: Sniper School
Sniper school is only for enlisted men and women, correct? Also, could I go to jump/scuba/uba training after IOC, even if I don't go into Force Recon? Just curious.
Thanks. Lamm |
