Piss as Medicene

I know that when you step on a sea urchin the best first aid is to put your foot in a bucket of urine. I have also heard that SF medics are trained to use urine as a "Sterilizing agent" for wounds after battlefield surgery. Is this true? Just doesn't sound very sterile to me.

Urine has ammonia and other minerals and what not in it that make it a natural antiseptic. Also, urine is a sterile liquid (as long as it doesn't pick up bacteria on its way out of your body) as it has been passed through your kidneys and what not. You can also urinate on your feet in the shower to keep athlete's foot at bay. So, it would not surprise me if SF medics are trained in the use urine for medicinal purposes.

Old indian trick is to piss on your hands and rub it in. This makes the skin on your hands tuff.

piss is also a great way to reduce the pain and irritation from jelly fish stings....I know I have done it before...

Urine works on the toxins produced by the Sea Urchin spines embedded in skin by neutrilizing with the alklaline pH. As for urine being a antispetic. Granted it is generally sterile (In most cases), it does not have any antispetic properties. When dealing with casualties in the field, the last thing I wanted to do is get my "weapon" out and pee onto someone's wound!

I'm with Donald on this one. Urine might kill some bacteria but is not an antiseptic.

If there was nothing else/better available, I could see using it to clean a dirt filled wound. However, not my first choice. It is supposed to be clean, and full of beneficial enzymes. Remember a few years ago all those nuts going around saying they drank piss on a regular basis to purify their bodies and build better enzymes? Fucking piss drinkers. I saw on the news how they some times went door to door and anyone who let them in for a demonstration could watch them drink piss samples they brough with them. Must be an acquired taste.
