Last year when I first got involved with supporting Military members I found that support groups can and do make a difference. I remember a member who received a letter from her "adopted soldiers" mother. It was a truly moving letter as well as showed what a difference we do make to others. I don't have the actual copy of the letter but I can tell you what it was about.
Denise had adopted a young man and had decided to mail a package to him. Like many of us when we first get an adopted member we don't know exactly what to send so we tend to put in the package what we think will be welcomed. Well she put an item in there that saved the young mans life. The letter Denise received from his mother going to what she considered "his guardian angel" described how her son was engaged to a girl that was his high school sweetheart. They were to be married once he returned from his duty in Iraq. Unfortunately there was a tragic car accident and she was killed. He being thousands of miles away and feeling extremely alone he could only think of one thing, that he couldn't live his life without her. He then took the time to plan his demise. He had it all planned out. That day he received a package from Denise inside was a calling card. He decided to call his parents just to hear them one last time. From the moment his mother answered the phone and he heard her voice he decided then and there that he couldn't do it. He couldn't put his mother through the hell of seeing to his remains. The mother of this soldier had wrote to Denise to tell her thank you for saving her sons life. A total stranger saved her sons life thousands of miles away by simply sending a phone card. If you know of a Military member currently deployed or a hospitalized veteran visit "Operation Uplink" this site is ran by The Veteran of Foreign Wars and they provide free phone cards that can make a big difference to all. -Julane |

Re: What a difference a Phone Card can make
Where would be the best place where I might be able to donate some phone cards that will get over to the troops deployed?

Re: What a difference a Phone Card can make
Awesome..I never thought of that. Just bring a phone card over with you and use a local phone where ever you are at..right? Why haven't more people done that?
Thanks for sharing the story with us. Lamm |
