Trooper Saves Man Hanging From Noose On Bridge

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- A Tennessee state trooper has saved a man's life by using his pocketknife to cut the rope he was using to hang himself from a bridge in a suicide attempt.

The 19-year-old fell 20 feet from the highway bridge to the street after Sgt. Paul Mooneyham cut the rope.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol officer said he found the man with a rope around his neck when he responded to an emergency dispatch call. He said the man jumped after he saw him.

Mooneyham said the man wasn't breathing when police found him after the fall, but regained consciousness once he removed the noose and shook him.

Authorities said the man had left a suicide note, and had apparently been despondent about a death in his family.
