Piracy Situation
I have read the headlines regarding these incidents in the waters off Somalia and the solution seems pretty simple to me. These merchant vessals need an armed security force on board. Hire an organization like Blackwater to ride along on these trips. How hard can it be? You are talking about pirates in boats that are probably 1/10th the size of the ship they are trying to take control of, which means they have to climb up probably on ropes. Now I am not Navy so maybe I'm wrong, but my Army mind tells me it can't be that hard to repell an attack like that. It's not like they are SEALs or they are coming in great numbers. I have seen pictures of a couple of these "pirate" boats and I'm pretty sure I could sink one with one well-tossed grenade.
Now I don't expect regular crew members to act like Force Recon Marines, but shouldn't the companies that own these ships hire just such individuals to ride shotgun when they are going through this area? It seems like it would save money and improve safety for these crews. |

I can't understand why the shipping companies haven't hired private security. They claim the situation would be "more dangerous" if there were arms aboard these merchant ships. It's dangerous now, and the only way the piracy will stop is if no ransom is paid and those kids get
iced every time they try to board a ship. -Pat |

Re: Piracy Situation
Better part of a year since this topic was brought up, and still it's a problem. Why won't our government unleash the Navy on these turds? They could zap their canoes out of the water from miles away without breaking a sweat... Why aren't our Marines, Rangers, SEALs (or anybody for that matter) surgically raiding pirate base camps and rendering them void of life? Little things like that would solve a lot of problems down the road and would lessen the need for commercial sailing companies to have to alter their courses or hire their own security. The government needs to grow some nads first though.

Re: Piracy Situation
Anybody familiar with the show Bait Car? The police set up a special car with cameras and engine kill switches and put it in an area where it will get stolen. Well how about Bait Ship? You hire a bunch of ex Marines and ex SEALS, let them get all armed up and take them for a ride through the beautiful waters off the coast of Africa. Put some signs on the side saying you're shipping gas, food and jewels. It would ba great! "Trolling for pirates." It would probably get higher ratings than American Idol!
