Training peak: Support Marines reach the zenith of their combat training

MARINE CORPS RECRUIT DEPOT SAN DIEGO, Calif.(October 29, 2004) -- "The Crucible was horrible, but this is a lot of fun," said Pfc. Ohran Carlisle, 1st Platoon, Company I, Marine Combat Training Battalion.

His allusion is to the 54-hour training evolution in which recruits hike more than 40 miles, solve combat-style obstacles and have only three meals and four hours of sleep each night.

The fun part comes after recruit training when the new Marines report to MCT to become combat-ready.

MCT, part of the School of Infantry, is a 22-day training cycle where the Marines learn combat skills, get a closer look at field tactics and learn several weapon systems.

Of the 22 days, 17 are spent training, mostly in the hills of Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif. The environment is far less intense than recruit training, but it is still very structured, according to 1st Sgt. Ronald Halcovich, Co. I first sergeant.

"This is great training," said Carlisle. "Everything they've taught us is something we will probably use in Iraq. It's all very useful."

After days of studying, academic tests, classes, combat instruction, firing weapons, live-fire squad rushes and living in the field, these new Marines embark on the Field Exercise, their final training exercise.

On the FX, each platoon has a campsite in a mock combat environment. Instructors lead the Marines on patrols while using combat tactics and field radio operation. Many of the patrols lead to simulated firefights with enemy platoons. Back at camp, the Marines dig two-man fighting holes and stand watch day and night.

Once they leave the field, the Marines take their final academic test before they graduate and move on to their military occupational specialty schools.

Thats great, only one thing to add. I don't believe that there is a peak really to performance. In my experience as long as you push yourself you will get better.
