Marine Recon in first enlistment
Is it possible to get into Marine Recon within your first enlistment or do you have to wait until you are promoted to a certain rank? And I can find hundreds of books and articles about Army Ranger, Army Special Forces, and Navy SEALs BUD/s training, but i cant find much about the schools you have to complete to get into Recon or Force Recon. Any help with that would be greatly apprectiated.

Try to PM USMCRET or USMC_CHUTER or Some other Marine to answer you. They may have overlooked this thread, I'm sure it wasn't on purpose.

Re: Marine Recon in first enlistment
Good question. Yes, you can go recon in your first enlistment. Recon battalions have a number of first-enlistment Marines, but most have a deployment or two in an infantry battalion under their belt before going recon. Force recon companies generally do not have first-term Marines, as they often seek out Marines with prior recon battalion or scout/sniper experience.
The main schools recon Marines attend are BRC/ARC (Basic Recon Course/Amphibious Recon Course), scuba, airborne, SERE... By the way, BRC and ARC are the same thing, different name/place. It's the school that earns you the 0321 Recon MOS. BRC is on the west coast, ARC on the east. Other schools recon Marines may attend are assault climber, HRST (helicoptor/rope suspension training), jumpmaster, pathfinder, Ranger, cold weather/mountain warfare, military freefall, and any number of others as required. Recon training is an ongoing thing throughout your time in the unit. In addtion to individual schools there are intense cycles of pre-deployment unit training, specific to the mission. As for books, there is a fairly recent one called "Marine Force Recon" by Fred Pushies. It does a decent job of outlining force recon units, missions, and training. Much of the information is also pertinent to battalion recon. Hope that helps. |
