Question dealing with college education before bootcamp.
I am a new member to this board; to see my introduction, look up my name in the "rool call" forum. I have a big question that I need an answer pretty quickly. I am in quite a bind. I am in my final semester before I receive my 4 yr degree. I am earning a degree in Secondary English Education; and am currently interning at a local high school. This is the toughest thing I have come across in my life. I am teaching everyday (for no pay, I am actually paying USF to teach everyday). I am also working two days a week (for my bills: truck payment, insurance, cell phone, and credit cards) at Blockbuster. the teacher I am working with is giving me zero help, I am having to come up with everything from scratch. Add to the fact that I am out of shape and need to work out; needless to say I am very stressed.
My question is this: What is the difference in rank I will receive between a two year degree and a 4 yr degree? I am seriously thinking about quitting school, giving me time to work to earn money and work out to help me in preparation for boot. Help me with any info you can find. I believe you get E-2 with 60, and E-3 with over 90..let me double check thoug, also verify with your recruiter.

With the Marines, you go in E-2 if you have 15 or more college credits. It doesn't matter how many more.

Not true. You can not come into the Navy as an E-4 even if you ahve a Masters. you will get E-3.

Re: Question dealing with college education before bootcamp.
If you are in your final semester, then finish school and get your degree. As others have told you, the degree won’t make a huge difference in your starting rank, but it gives you options further down the road. Also, if you quit school now, regardless of how many credits you have, if you go to a different college you will need to do your last 30 semester hours with the new school – that is a Department of Education requirement., and it could be years before you could get your last classes completed at USF.
Also, not to piss in your cornflakes, I know that your situation is stressful, but I think that you will find your time in the Corps will be a great deal tougher… maybe not financially, but to put it all in perspective you are reasonably assured of your next meal, of knowing that you’ll be able to go to sleep tonight in a bed, taking a shower tomorrow, having a toilet to sit down on, and sleeping with a roof over your head. All of these are things that Marines learn not to take for granted. |

Re: Question dealing with college education before bootcamp.
With the Corps no matter what you do the only way to graduate boot camp an E-3 is if you are your Company Honorman. If you have 16.5 credit hours (not 15) then you would get E-2 (PFC). But if you graduate with that 4 year degree then you can sign up to become an officer.
