Re: USS Truman
Airwingers complaining about big decks...... try 6 months on an LST Spongie... flat bottom, one screw, virtually no room to PT -- the flight deck takes one CH-46.
Then again, being embarked on a ship is just part of the price that you have to pay to be a Marine. |

Re: USS Truman
Try being on an LST (or maybe it was an LSD?) while in a typhoon in the Pacific. even the crew was too sick to stand up.
The berthing area, filled with puking Marines, is not a fun place to be stuck for days on end. -Mac |

Re: USS Truman
My last float, I was on an LPH, and while crossing the Indian Ocean in a storm and very heavy seas (taking waves over the bow of the LPH -- flight deck is at 75'), I had the pleasure of watching our LST alternately taking waves over the bow and the screw coming out of the water. Very glad I was not on that ship. Found out later that the Marines were in their racks wearing flack jackets and helmets because they were getting thrown all over the place.

Re: USS Truman
I remember being actually strapped into the rack with bungie cords. Of course, that could be a false memory created by all of us retelling that horrorstory too many times over too many beers.
What I do remember tho is getting hit with puke from the Marine accross the passage way and a couple rack levels above me. I remember the deck of the birthing area awash with puke and layin with my head slightly over the edge of my rack (cause I was tryin not to puke into my rack) and watchin that slimmy mess and thinkin we were all gonna die. I remember the hull cracked and we took on water and the mess deck flooded. Strangely enough it was pretty much only the chow area that flooded (at least as far as I knew) I remember a Sailor sayin we were "listing 60 to 60 and she almost lays all the way over on every roll" and not wanting to know what he meant. -Mac |

Re: USS Truman
We must have been on the same float Grimmy (82). I remember climbing the ladder to go to the head and seeing a Coke can fly from one bulkhead to another. I decided that it could wait.
I saw one of our Marines fall from the top rack and bounce off the racks twice before hitting the deck. He decided it was safer to lay there in the puke than to be in the top rack. I tell my wife about times like these and she doesn't understand why I miss the Corps. |

- USMCRET6391 Holy shit, I'm in a carrier with VMFA-115 from MCAS Baufort, but we left from Norfolk. The internet here is so fucking slow that I could click on a site, take a shit, come back, and it still wouldn't be done by the time I came back. I've spent the whole day to even reply here. |
