just a stupid question
When Marines are in TBS, the Gunny Sgts get to yell at them. But outside wouldn't they have to address the 2nd Lts as "sir" and treat them as the officers they are?? It seems kinda funny to me.

Re: just a stupid question
I think you're a little confused. No one "yells at you" at TBS, unless it's a Captain or Major... and then you've really screwed up.

Re: just a stupid question
I think what you're thinking of is OCS... Officer Candidates have enlisted instructors (all former drill instructors) who run them through their paces. Candidates do not address these instructors as "sir", but rather by their rank. Enlisted instructors at OCS are harsh, but fair with their trainees, not unlike drill instructors with enlisted recruits. The difference is, they train their candidates with the understanding that most will soon outrank them. The point is to instill in the candidate the idea that staff NCO's and NCO's are a wealth of experience and knowledge to draw from as a commander. Once a candidate graduates OCS, he/she is an officer and is treated as such. They move on to TBS and are afforded the courtesies granted by their rank.

Re: just a stupid question
I have a question, I hope y'all don't mind me asking it.
I plan to become an Officer of Marines, and when I do report to my unit as a 2ndLt., would it be wise and would y'all recommend that I go to my NCO's and SNCO's for their knowledge of the unit, commanding, the Corps, etc? Thanks, Lamm |

Re: just a stupid question
The best thing a young 2nd lieutenant can do is stay out of the way and let his NCO's and Staff NCO's do thier jobs. Dont ask them, just watch and listen.

Re: just a stupid question
Yeah, the enlisted run the unit. Officers are just there to sign the papers and looking pretty. SNCOs run it all. Unless if you are in the airwing, then the pilots run things a bit. I guess it's because they think that it's "all about them because they are the ones flying."

Re: just a stupid question
Also, don't go around asking your troops how they are doing and if they have any problems because you will never get the truth. Why would a Marine tell you when he will tell his NCOs first, and if it needs to, you will find out. Besides, most officers don't really care when they ask a LCpl if he has any problems. For some reason they like to pretend that they care. You'll know what i'm talking about when you are in.

Re: just a stupid question
How are we depressing you? You should hear one of my buddies that is with Marine Aircraft Group 31. He can keep talking about the bad shit the Marine Corps has. He can get you depressed.
