2nd Youngest Marine ... and Newest

My daughter graduated Parris Island Recruit Training on Friday, 21 April as Private First Class Sarah Dyer, 4th Training Battalion, Papa Company, 4013 Platoon, Sgt First Class Bowen SDI. She was the second youngest Marine on the parade deck that day among 400-odd graduates, including 7 male and 2 female platoons.

She scored 276 on the PFT and fired 197 at the range. At the emblem ceremony on Thursday, she received her brother's actual awarded Eagle Globe and Anchor. Her DI said as she presented her the emblem, "He would be very proud of you."

I know I am.

She's reports to her MOS school 1 May (I know this is backwards) at 29 Palms for 8 weeks training in Comm. She may or may not go to MCT (she wants to) and will be discharged for purposes of attending ROTC at Ohio State - Marine Option - this fall.

Yes, she turned down the West Point appointment. She wrote me "I can't leave my beloved Corp." So, in four years, I hope to report that she has been commissioned 2nd Lt. USMCR. She looks absolutely great.

I kind of had a hunch she would choose the Marine Corps...call it woman's intution, or maybe just a sister's heart. Sarah continues to honor Chris' legacy in everything she does. Please give her our congratulations John, you have every right to be very proud.

Certainly congratulations are in order, and to a lesser extent but similar way, I understand the pride you must feel. Best wished to you and your daughter!
