unsure of answer
Now I know this will seem stupid, but I personally am unsure since I never had braces. A friend of mine who DEP'ed in Dec. forgot to list he had braces 4 years ago and has them off. He asked me if it is considered fraudulent enlistment if he doesn't bring it up with his recruiter? I told him it is considered fraud..... correct me if I am wrong.

Re: unsure of answer
Unless things have changed, they wont enlist him if he currently has braces. As to not telling them he had them, they dont care,....if he has his wisdom teeth however, he wont about 7-10s after he gets to boot camp.

Re: unsure of answer
Yeah I remember seeing all those Marines on bed rest because of that. They were also on some crazy painkillers too. I also hear a story that a Rct would save up his medication and not use it, but instead he would sell it to other Rcts. Anybody ever hear that story?

Re: unsure of answer
Clearly the US Dental services have a different approached to Wisdom Teeth ( or 8's to those dentally trained). It's best left till the patient is at least 25 years of age to see if they will present in an acceptable position. If not or if xray evidence show that there is no hope then - out with them !

Re: unsure of answer
I doubt the "best practice" of general dentistry is much of a factor to the practice.
I'd guess more weight is given to the "can we afford to have a large portion of each new crop of US Marines layed up with wisdom teeth issues year after year? A few times a year a new crop of 18-20 year-olds is deposted into The Fleet. And the USMC isnt all that small an organization. I can see how it might be as many as a thousand or so Marines rendered basically non-operational by such issues on a constant basis. -Mac |

Re: unsure of answer
Don't want to be yanking impacted wisdom teeth on the back of a ship rolling port to starboard crossing the Pacific. Had a root canal done that way, and it was quite the experience!
