Rifle Qual
A brief descripion of the KD (known distance) course of fire for rifle qualification in the Marine Corps.. The Marines are in the process of adding to this a combat-shoot portion that will factor into the final score, and are reverting to a 250 point scale. I don't know much about that change yet, so I'll stick to the basics.
200 yard slow fire: 15 rounds in 20 minutes. 5 each from the sitting, kneeling, and standing (off-hand) positions on a 26"x19" ("dog") target. Hits in the 12" center ring are worth 2 points, other hits in the black are worth 1. Anything in the white is obviously a miss. 200 yard rapid fire: 2 magazines of 5 rounds each, from the kneeling position, in a time limit of 70 seconds. This is also fired on the "dog" target, as described above. Any hits in the black are scored as one point, center ring or not. 300 yard slow fire: 5 rounds in 5 minutes from the kneeling position, on the target described above. Each hit in the black is worth one point. 300 yard rapid fire: 2 magazines of 5 rounds each, from the prone position (unsupported), in a 70 second time limit. Same target, each hit in the black is worth 1 point. 500 yard slow fire: 10 rounds in 10 minutes from the prone, unsupported. The target is a 40"x20" silhouette. Any hit in the black is worth 1 point. Firing at all distances is conducted with "iron sights", ie no optics. Qualification scores are as follows: Marksman: 25-34 points Sharpshooter: 35-39 points Expert: 40-65 points |

Re: Rifle Qual
Sounds like the Qual course they had when I went through Boot Camp and while I was Active, except we used the "A" target for the slow fire portions. Also, the point system is a bit different, but I dont see a great deal of difference in the the course itself.

Re: Rifle Qual
They already changed to the 250 point system (out here anyway). I shot the 250 pt course back in January.
Aside from the scoring change, the 300 yd slow fire is now shot from the sitting. -Jim |

Re: Rifle Qual
I like the 250 pt scoring system a lot better, so I'm glad we're going back to it. It's also good news about sitting at the 300. Hopefully the new range change will be implemented Marine Corps wide. I know that the reason my unit hasn't changed yet is that we dont' have anybody trained up on administering the new course. Next year we will though, I'm sure.
