I have a major problem
I am going to be a junior in high school this year and as my title describes there is a serious problem. I planned on joining the DEP after my junior year to get a better understanding of the Marine Corps but I will be too young to sign my own papers to enter the DEP. My mother has flat out refused to sign these papers and I get the feeling that she won't cave in. My father has no legal rights over me so I can't get him to sign the papers and my step father goes right along with my mother. I told her I am joining the Marine Corps for good reasons not some stupid teenage thing and she still refuses. Suggestions anyone?

Re: I have a major problem
Unfortunately, there may not be too much you can do at this time except wait for your 18th birthday to come around. Why don't you sit down with your folks and come up with reasons why you want to join the Corps? Have you thought about consulting with a recruiter and have him visit your family?

Re: I have a major problem
Don't fret. The DEP won't give you the slightest help in understanding the Marine Corps anyway. As a matter of fact, the first three years of my enlistment haven't been much help in that regard, either - so no worries!
Just enlist when you're 18. You can hang around the recruiter's office all you want until then, I'm sure. -Jim |

Re: I have a major problem
Yea I know I could just hang out with the recruiter but to me that just really wouldn't feel the same. I have a friend who was in the DEP and he says that they really do push you there. I want the feeling, the feeling of being ordered around and told what to do. It would help me to be a little more humble when it comes my time to join up.

You got a cell phone? I can call you and yell at you while you do pushups or something.
And don't worry, you'll be humbled instantly when you meet your drill instructors. -Jim |

Re: I have a major problem
^ LMAO Panzer, you are just priceless!
![]() Krahn, I can remember feeling like it was the end of the world when my mother told me I couldnt go to prom and my senior trip, that I would have to chose... you are young yet, and its not the end of the world... Good things come to those who wait, and I know its hard being patient, but you will be 18 soon enough. I have a question for anyone can answer, does anyone know anything about Young Marines? that might be an option to tide you over... -Kim |

Re: I have a major problem
I was in the same boat as you. My Dad is all for me joining the Marines but wanted me to wait until I was old enough to sign on my own and so that I would be sure I wanted to do it. I waited and now I have about 2 weeks until my 18th Birthday. It seems like its taking forever but you dont know where the time went when its here. I worked out on my own and found out all of the info i could, basically by readin these forums for as long as I have. Talk to your Mom tho and listen to what everyone here tells you.

Get into the ROTC program at your school. Even if it is Air Force, Army or Navy. It will teach you some respect and also give you the chance to, "get ordered around"

Re: I have a major problem
^ I’m with Top here. You have your orders (from your Mom & step father). It’s not “No”, it’s “Not Now” or “Not Yet”. What to do in the meantime? Exercise some discipline (re: instant and willing obedience to orders), study, PT, excel at school work, and wait. Time is on your side. Your 18th birthday is getting closer every day, and there is nothing that they can do about that. Exercise some self-discipline. I know that that is nearly impossible for most 16 & 17 year olds, but no one else can do it for you.

Re: I have a major problem
Alright obviously I am immature in your eyes. But you are right so yea I will listen but I am still going to bring the subject up with the parents around that time or something like that. I run and workout on my own everyday so I guess I am fine there.

Re: I have a major problem
Something your going to learn eventually, no matter how much you want something, and how hard you work for it, sometimes things dont always go your way. You are lucky because once you do turn 18, there is nothing stopping you... You're enthusiasm to join the Corps is a good thing, but you just have to be patient, but take your time and enjoy being the age you are, have fun... quit wishing your life away, trust me life is short enough as it is.
