I Did It!!!
Well, I finally got it everybody. I got my mother's permission to join the DEP after my Junior year! I am so glad that this issue is finally resolved, I was seriously not feeling so great about the whole DEP thing when she said she would never ever sign it. But what is really the kicker is the fact that what convinced her to give in was to read the Marine Corps pamphlets I got from my recruiter. I guess they make those things for a reason, huh? lol. She even went so far as to try and interest me in joining the Army or Navy instead so I could be a medic or corpman, but that just isn't really my thing so I declined. Wow, what a day this turned out to be.

Congrats Garin,
Being that your Mom resisted for so long, it must have been a hard thing for her to do. Be extra nice to her to show her you understand that and you appreciate her. -Pat |

Re: I Did It!!!
Make sure when you are in you keep in touch with your mom and keep her informed because shit is always going down and all she thinks (along with every mother that has a son/daughter in the Corps) is "OMG my son is in the Corps and they might send him." No matter what your job is.

About that mom thing.
Yeah, keep her in the loop. Going slack there can have repercussions. When the Beirut barracks bombing happened, I was in Korea. I didn't call my mom and tell her I was ok. I was, after all, on just about the other side of the world so it never occurred to me that she'd be concerned. She is a teacher and I figured she had a somewhat decent grasp of global geography and would know I wasn't in that area, even remotely. Well, a few days later I was called into my COs office. There I was braced and locked and given a detailed description of what my fate was to be if I did not get off my derelict ass and call my mom. It seems his CO had pretty much just done the same thing to him, about me calling my mom, because a congress critter had just done the same thing to his CO, about me calling my mom. It was a loooooong time before I was allowed to forget that. -Mac |
