Can I have braces?
I'm 17 right now, and I actually started DEP last Tuesday. I'm planning to enlist in the Marine Corps, but my mom informed me that I will be getting braces for my bottom set of teeth. Just wondering if this will have any affect on my joining the Marines.

To my best recollection you will have to have them removed before going to basic. There are no orthodontists in the Navy (Last I heard anyway) and you won't have the time to maintain them.

You are in the DEP? Must be nice... I still have to wait till summer to start that. Are your teeth really bad? I mean because if it is just minor then I don't really see the reason in getting the braces in the first place. But if it can be done before it is time for you to go to boot then go ahead and get them. You should your orthodontist about how long you need to have them in.

If the braces become a problem you might just say to your mom that, hey, the Corps will just take them out when I get to boot, so why spend the loot on what's gonna go poof anyway?

I knew of several people who had braces installed AFTER they got out of boot but they nave wouldn't pay for them. Best to not get them until after you are out of Boot Camp
