Going to Beaufort
Yup, you heard right, i'm going to Beaufort S.C. MALS-31. Anybody ever been there or is currently there? I graduate from my school this tuesday and heading straight to my duty station. Hopefully they will deploy because I want to travel. I hear they go to Europe a lot, but that's just what I heard from the Admin guy here. Semper Fi Marines!!!

Re: Going to Beaufort
Damn, I wasnt even aware MCAS Beaufort was still active. They have been threatening to shut it down for years. I was there from Oct 79 to June of 83. It's out in the middle of nowhere although Charleston and Savannah are relatively short drives if you need to be in a big City. Hilton Head Island has turned into a pretty big resort area also. The Base itself is small, there is only one Marine Aircraft Group there (MAG-31) with around 6 Sqds of F-18s plus support elements. When I was there the Sqds deployed aboard ship a lot (I was on the USS Forrestal with VMFA-115 in 80 and 81) and I think they still do. I am sure there are Sqds aboard the flatops from there right now. We also made an occasional up to Iceland (NAS Keflavik) to support an Air Force Sqd that is stationed there.
Hope this helps Top -Top |

Re: Going to Beaufort
Well I'm here now and it seems like it's not that bad. I'm in MALS 31 but they moved me to MAG training. So i'm handling the training schedules for the pilots and other shit like that. But i'd rather be with a Sqd so I can deploy. I hear two are comming back and two are going to replace them in Iraq.

You'll get your chance.
Have fun while you're there, learn as much as you can, and stay out of trouble. |

Re: Going to Beaufort
It feels weird adjusting to this place. It seems that everywhere you go in the Marine Corps it feels weird at first. Then when you get used to it you have to go somewhere else! I even felt like that at bootcamp.
