Re: ranks
Well what were you wondering? Enlisted you start off as a Private E-1, E-2 after Boot and you can go up to an E-10. ROTC you would start off as a 2nd Lt. and work your way up to General. You can go enlisted and go to college and through OCS and become an officer.

Re: ranks
Pay Grade Rank
E-1 Private E-2 Private First Class (PFC) E-3 Lance Corporal E-4 Corporal E-5 Sergeant E-6 Staff Sergeant E-7 Gunnery Sergeant E-8 First Sergeant or Master Sergeant E-9 Sergeant Major or Master Gunnery Sergeant E-10 Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps WO-1 Warrant Officer CWO-2 Chief Warrant Officer 2 CWO-3 Chief Warrant Officer 3 CWO-4 Chief Warrant Officer 4 CWO-5 Chief Warrant Officer 5 O-1 2nd Lieutenant O-2 1st Lieutenant O-3 Captain O-4 Major O-5 Lieutenant Colonel O-6 Colonel O-7 Brigadier General (one star) O-8 Major General (two star) O-9 Lieutenant General (three star) O-10 General (four star) If you enlist, you go to boot camp as a recruit (or private). If you earn a commission (through ROTC or any other source) you start off as a second lieutenant. In the senior enlisted (Staff Non-Commissioned Officer or Staff NCO / SNCO) ranks, the pay grades of E-8 and E-9 allow the senior Marines to select a career track that will either leave them in their MOS or allow them to become somewhat of a generalist. All E-8s are considered the same paygrade and rank, but the ranks that they wear and are referred to are different. The same is true with E-9s. The First Sergeant and Sergeant Major are considered "administrative" positions (I hate that term) and those SNCOs can be assigned to any unit, regardless of the Marine's MOS (Military Occupational Specialty). So that means that a First Sergeant who was raised as an infantryman could well find himself assigned to a supply or aviation unit. On the other hand, the Master Sergeant is equal in rank to a 1st Sgt, but has remained in his or her MOS and is seen as a / the technical expert in their field, and will continue to be assigned to units that are related to their MOS. Therefore, a Master Sergeant who has been raised in the Motor Transportation or Aviaition Maintenance field will stay with a Motor T or Aviation Maintenance unit. There is only one E-10 in the Marine Corps. The Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps is the senior enlisted person in the Corps and is the direct and senior enlisted advisor to the Commandant of the Marine Corps. It used to be that the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps was an E-9 and just wore a different rank insignia from other Sergeants Major. It was in the late 70s / early 80s that the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps was recognized as an E-10 and paid accordingly. |
