Re: Be honest with yourself
Soon you'll be hearing the media say how this war is longer than WWII, and it will be true. Once you get past that fact, you'll have to understand that in "The Big One", as it was called, 2% of the worlds population died. Something that we are not even close to happening. You just know they will play that fact card, but not the later.

Re: Be honest with yourself
Actually the "this war is lasting longer than WW2" depends on when you start counting the start of WW2 and when you start counting this latest outbreak's beginning.
In many ways, WW2 started in early '30s with the conflicts in Spain and US forces tangling with German supported forces in Nicaragua, and the general Chinese kerfluffle. A person good at that sort of thing could probably make a case for US involvement in WW2 over a 10 year period or so, in a somewhat lesser intensity than the last couple years. But, if you consider that Islamism was largely reborn in the late 1920s and early 30s through association with "the philosophies of the Germans" and that the islamists were allied to the nazis, how ever softly and in a generalized arabic backassward way, a body good at raising questions could raise the question about when this war actually started? Personally, and this aint something I'd consider generally acceptable but just a personal opinion, I see this current mess as a continuation of the crap that's been on-again, off-again since the implosion of the Austro-Hungarian empire. -Mac |

Re: Be honest with yourself
Please don't hate me, but this is what I think.
We achieved our goal militarily, the Iraqis along with US and UN failed to install a new government after we overthrew Saddam. The post-war planning was horrendous. Tearing away the central government in a country that has been devastated by war has never worked. We should have used a version of the Marshall Plan with the Middle East, like we did at the end of World War II in Europe and Asia. We fought in North Africa, while the Soviets had a bunch of casualties on their front. Remember, Hitler invaded Poland first, not France. That is one reason why the Red Army was allowed to enter Berlin first, Eisenhower agreed. Most of the Germany Army was not prepared for the Invasion of Normandy. Opening the two fronts in Europe helped achieve victory in that theater. It was also a political move too, to let fascism (Nazi Germany )and communism (Soviet Union) duke each other out. The allies assumed the winner would not be strong enough post-war. This is a new age of warfare. There are factions in each country that we end up fighting. Not the countries military themselves. Whether people admit it or not, war has evolved. I think we need to pull out of our occupation of Iraq and split up the region into pieces (Kurdish, Sunni, and Shia). -Harm |

Re: Be honest with yourself
We went into finish a job and that is the mission. Parts of Iraq have been handed back to the Iraqi establishment to control already and that is good.
There is a end in sight for those who went in to over throw that monster Saddam. It may not be a clean and tidy end result, but the point is that Allies have rebuilt the Government/Security infrastructure after the 2003 Iraq war ( Of which I took part in) to allow the Iraq people to control their own destiny, post Saddam era. -Doc |

Re: Be honest with yourself
I think we need to leave. Goals or not the war is a drain on the economy. Theres no system in place to support troops return home mentally and physically altered. Our boys benefits are getting cut. The more we send the more problems will come back. How much gas does it take to power a tank . . . how much fuel does it take to power and army. Goals or not this war is hurting our country and was unapproved to begin with.
